I graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Law in Grand Forks, ND, in May 1995. I promptly moved to Oregon for the Oregon Bar Exam. By September, I had my law license and started my first attorney role as a Deputy District Attorney in Coos County, Oregon. I began as the juvenile prosecutor but was very soon transferred to an overwhelmed misdemeanor adult court. During that I time, I had to quietly go through my own Chapter 7, so I understand both the process and the feelings of enduring Bankruptcy. Trust me when I say better days are ahead.
I left at the end of 1996 and began my own private practice in the Portland metro area, focused on criminal defense, civil rights and family law. By the Summer of 1998, I was burned out, disillusioned, and disgusted with the entire legal profession. So, I took a break for a couple years and found my way to Los Angeles with the intention of writing screenplays about my experiences.
After arriving in L.A., I was like every other starving artist – I needed a “survival” job in order to exist here and do my art. I understand being broke living in L.A. as much as anybody! After going through several junk jobs, I ended up working for a national sign company doing copyright infringement work. The founder/CEO of the company liked me enough to put me through the California Bar Exam in 2001 while paying my salary for two months off to prep for it. I worked as his in-house corporate counsel for the next two years, handling all IP (which was a lot), managed copyright and other litigation, and advised on a host of issues related to running a manufacturing plant with over 100 full-time employees and a sales force of 250 independent contractors across the country.
Sadly, all good things come to an end, and in this case, my boss decided to retire in 2003. That meant the end of my job, too. We parted very amicably, and I have done sporadic work for both him and the company in the years since.
I continued to do various copyright and trademark work in Southern California and ended up managing the IP portfolios for the sign company plus two additional successful companies, a cosmetics company and a hair care company. I moved back to Oregon with my new wife and two babies in 2006 so that our children could grow up around our families. I was on retainer with all three companies and worked easily from home. Then came the 2008 recession, and two of the companies had to cut costs, of which I was one, while the other was purchased by L’Oreal. Back to the drawing board...
In 2009, I took on a client, Michael C. Ruppert, for an appeal of an administrative judgment. We quickly became close friends, and soon thereafter, business partners in the formation and operation of CollapseNet.com (Collapse Network, Inc.). In addition to forming the corporation and doing all the IP work for CollapseNet, I continued to represent him in various entertainment law endeavors. He abruptly left the company two years in, leaving me to run the company, which I did until the end of 2015. I became CEO, did the books, posted most content and developed some decent content for the site. I even dabbled as a documentary film maker, having written, produced, co-directed, co-edited and narrated the feature
“Las Vegas: Glimmers in the Desert” in 2013.
CollapseNet was built around MCR and his vision. In his absence and certainly following his suicide in 2014, all I could do was to bail out the water until it finally sunk. Operations ceased on December 31, 2015 (shut down debt free).
Just before that happened, my wife got an excellent job in Bend, Oregon. We moved again. I worked on and off on copyright and trademark matters, but mostly tried to raise my children and try to heal my body (I had developed fibromyalgia, which is why I work this way and do not do litigation).
I began splitting my time between Los Angeles and Bend at the end of 2022 to start my new practice and help support my son, Jake Miller, to get into the entertainment indutry as an actor and screenwriter. He's written several excellent screenplays and is currently working with his manager to produce his mindblowing hit-to-be TV pilot, YouGenix.
My professional focus now is upon helping individuals and couples get debt relief through Chapter 7 personal bankruptcy. I am also available to do some debt relief work for small businesses and transactional work in entertainment, copyright, and trademark law.
